A rarely kept Apistogramma that was first catalogued in 1986 by Kullander. Living in the upper Rio Juruá in the far west of Brazil. The species has no reports of being rare or threatened in its native habitat, it is just one of those "hard to get to" types. It is not as abundantly colorful as the types of Apistos that have been line bred for years, but it is a very cool specimen if you appreciate and value natural variants. Often they stay darker and less yellow than other popular Apistos and instead tend to produce dark bodies with electric blue areas and accents of orange and gold.
