Males grow to 12-14 cm in aquarium while females reach 8-10 cm. In the wild this species can grow to 10-12 cm. in TL. It takes a year to reach adulthood with a size of 10 cm. Haplochromis ishmaeli can spawn at 7-8 cm of size when it is 6-8 months old. The period of sexual activity is about 3 years, the fish may live for 6-9 years in aquarium. It is a pharyngeal crusher, feeding almost exclusively on snails and bivalves. (From Cichlid Room Companion)
