Bucktooth tetra - native to the Amazon and Tocantins Rivers in South America. Very aggressive scale eater, requires heavily planted tank and substantial group. A 75 with 30 fish will not only survive, but be exceptionally beautiful. The fish are constantly in motion, and when young, unusully beautiful. Placing the tank in a spot that catches afternoon sunlight is perfect. They will coexist with relatively few species, but Anostomus anostomus and Anostomus ternetzi are ideal, as are other headstanders. Again, the tank must be heavily planted with Vallisneria, Amazon swords and other tall plants. They eat everything, but meaty foods are necessary at least 2-3 times a week. If you can manage the aggression, they are one of the most spectacular fish to keep. They are egg scatterers, and at 3-4 inches an increase in water temperature, large water change and heavy feeding with worms, insect larvae and krill will stimulate spawning. They will eat the eggs, usually at dawn as the sun enters the tank, so if you want any to raise, you must be alert and gather them immediately.
