The Bluetail Splitfin is native to the Upper Rio Panuco Basin, Rio Verde Drainage including Lake Media Luna in Mexico. It is a livebearer inhabiting streams, lakes, and springs. It prefers warm, hard, slow moving water and feeds primarily on algae and detritus.
