Species Profile: Betta channoides

Common Name:   Snakehead betta

Species Photo by: Greg Gregory

Description:   Channoides have a more robust body than the Albimarginata and are more red, whereas the Albimarginata can be more of a burgundy to orange color. The easiest way to differentiate them is that the dorsal fin on the Channoides is all red with no black. A somewhat territorial fish, but can be kept in groups using larger aquariums. Approximately 5 gallons per pair is a helpful guide. These fish reach a maximum size of ~2 inches. They tolerate a range of water conditions but do best in softer water with a pH in the 6-7 range. They do well with temperatures in the 75-85F range with improved color and spawning behavior seen at the higher temps.
