Species Profile: Apistogramma barlowi

Description:   A mouthbrooding species of Apistogramma where the male (usually) incubates the eggs in his mouth. Behaves like most Apistos in that it dwells near the substrate and favors blackwater or partially tannic waters without strong current. Very distinct head and mouth shape. Small to medium sized as far as Apistos go with males reaching a body length of about 3 inches (excluding finnage). A very fun fish with a personality as big as its mouth!

Genetic Line:   Other

I got this male from a fellow club member, they had picked it up from a LFS and they were hoping to locate a female to try and breed them, but after some time with no luck locating a female, they decided to sell the fish in order to make room for other proects. Now I am the one waiting to find a mate for my big mouthed guy. He currently lives happily in a South American community tank alongside Corydoras, Ancistrus, and a couple Spp of tetra. I can't recall the lineage of the fish (I've reached out to the seller, but have not yet heard back), but I want to say it is an F1?.. I will update this entry if I get confirmation.
