A less common shell dweller endemic to Lake Tanganyika, L. ornatipinnis has an elongated body and less of a tendency to move large amounts of sand substrate compared with other shell dwellers. Variations in fin patterns and subtle color differences occur with localized populations.
Category: Cichlids
Global Region: Africa
Distribution: Lake Tanganyika
Collection Point: Kigoma
Genetic Line: FX 3rd or more Generation
Year Acquired: 2021
Acquired a group of young fish from Sand City Cichlids in Feb 2021. Very compatible with a range of tankmates but no breeding seen until they were kept in a species only tank. Very nice looking shell dweller with beautiful black pattern markings on dorsal and caudal fins.
Species Spawned: Yes
Dominant male declares a territory and protects the females and drives other males out. Unused shells are buried. Females and males do dig in the sand but not much - just enough to customize their shell preferences. No huge aquascaping like multies can do. Once spawning occurs it continues with fry co-existing in the same aquarium.
Have Reared Fry? Yes
Adults are tolerant of fry but drive them out after 2-3 of weeks. A colony will form if you give them enough room. I've had 100+ established in a 50g lowboy tank.
Young fish available? Yes
