Aquarist Notes

Collection Point:   Arroyo Yerbalito

Genetic Line:   FX 3rd or more Generation

Year Acquired:   2023

These fish are descended from an Uraguay collection near Arroyo Yerbalito. I acquired a group of 5 young fish from Jim Cormier in the Spring of 2023 and kept them in summer tubs each year. Maintained in unheated aquariums indoors for the winter. Temperatures varied widely from low 50s to 80s (°F).

Species Spawned:   Yes

After 2 years I see the sole female carrying eggs. Hopefully she will hold them and they'll hatch successfully. Original group turned out to be 4 males and a single female. I had to remove 1 male due to fighting, and eventually 2 more. The pair spawned successfully when they were the only fish in the 40g breeder. Temp was about 65 degrees F. After 2+ weeks I moved the carrying female to another tank and she began releasing fry to graze after ~18-20 days. Small brood maybe 10-12 fry.

Have Reared Fry?   Yes

Moved the female 2x over the last few weeks and she dutifully protected her small brood of ~12 fry and h lose them grow. Aside from spitting them out each time she was netted she’s been an exemplary mom. Fry feast on BBS and they are less inclined to go to mom’s mouth for cover.
