Indostomus paradoxus, commonly known as the Paradox Pipefish or Armoured Stickleback, is a miniature freshwater fish belonging to the family Indostomidae. Native to Southeast Asia, it inhabits slow-moving or stagnant waters, including vegetated marshes, canals, and swamps.
Adults reach approximately 3 cm in standard length and possess an elongated body covered in protective bony plates, a narrow tubular snout, and small fins.
This peaceful, slow-moving micro-predator feeds primarily on small aquatic invertebrates and requires appropriately sized live foods. Its unusual appearance, specialized feeding behaviour, and small adult size make it a fascinating species for dedicated aquarists interested in uncommon freshwater fish.
