Aquarist Species:  Indostomus Paradoxus

Aquarist: thopson

Species Profile: Indostomus Paradoxus

Description:   Indostomus paradoxus, commonly known as the Paradox Pipefish or Armoured Stickleback, is a miniature freshwater fish belonging to the family Indostomidae. Native to Southeast Asia, it inhabits slow-moving or stagnant waters, including vegetated marshes, canals, and swamps. Adults reach approximately 3 cm in standard length and possess an elongated body covered in protective bony plates, a narrow tubular snout, and small fins. This peaceful, slow-moving micro-predator feeds primarily on small aquatic invertebrates and requires appropriately sized live foods. Its unusual appearance, specialized feeding behaviour, and small adult size make it a fascinating species for dedicated aquarists interested in uncommon freshwater fish.

Aquarist Notes

Photo of aquarist's species:

Collection Point:   Unknown

Genetic Line:   Other

Year Acquired:   2026

Acquired four Indostomus paradoxus from Kowloon Aqua Pets in 2026. The origin and genetic lineage of these specimens have not been confirmed.

Currently maintaining all four specimens in a 2.5-gallon true Walstad-style aquarium alongside Carbon Rili Neocaridina shrimp. The aquarium uses a natural planted ecosystem approach, relying on plants, substrate, and biological processes to support water quality.

Maintained as part of my interest in uncommon freshwater species, specialized husbandry, and the potential for captive breeding.

Breeding activity has not yet been documented.
