Category: Cichlids
Global Region: South America
Distribution: Coastal Rivers of Peru and Ecuador
Genetic Line: Aquarium Strain
Year Acquired: 2024
I was lucky enough to obtain a beautiful peaceful adult pair in January 2024. Coexists well with an adult pair of severums (Heros liberifer) and both pairs spawn regularly. Any smaller fish can and will be eaten. Fussy eater needs a lot of frozen or live foods. They devour large earthworms.
Species Spawned: Yes
Not overly agressive during spawning, provided fish stay away from the spawning site. Typical 'head to heat' dominance displays but no fighting at all. Female is a good parent and is always driving the male away as his role is to protect the territory.
Have Reared Fry? Yes
For successful rearing I remove the eggs 2 days after spawning and hatch artificially with Hydrogen Peroxide added to help prevent fungus. Eggs hatch in 3 days and the huge swarm of fry gorges on BBS.
Young fish available? Yes
